Iron Man 2 - A Review

The biggest question plaguing everyone's mind is whether Iron Man 2 is as good as its first iteration. As trends go sequels have a tendency to fall flat on the face though recent successes like the Spiderman series seemed to have turned the tide. Thankfully, Iron Man 2 contributes to that growing minority.

Without giving away the story, I am going to try my best and give you all a faint idea of what to expect from this action powerhouse.

Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as the smooth talking, swashbuckling Tony Stark. His dialogues are full of wit and humor and like in Sherlock Holmes the audience falls for all that glib talk hook line and sinker. Gwyneth Paltrow is back as Pepper Pots and despite looking old in some frames stands her own against Tony Stark's shenanigans and at times dick head behavior. What also redeem's the movie is that the viewer is able to separate the characters of Tony and Iron Man and see them separately. Tony Stark is shown with all the human imperfections he is known to have and yet has that endearing hero like quality that makes him acceptable under the metal suit. Iron Man whenever he is on screen is invincible in all his shiny metal glory and nothing can keep him down. Tony's increasing despair at the life threatening condition and how it leads him to behave incorrigibly pulls at the viewer's heart strings. Not to be missed is a drunk performance by him in the Iron Man suit that elicits some good laughs.

Terrence Howard was not so lucky and is not missed either. His shoes ably filled by Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes who hits paydirt by getting to be War Machine. Though not true to his comic book origins, the character development is believable and he plays worthy adversary/sidekick/partner to Iron Man.

Another character high on the anticipation list was Scarlett Johansson, very drool worthy as Shield Agent Natalie Rushman aka Black Widow and boy does she have those curves down pat. Scarlett can act no doubt and does ample justice to her secretary avatar, however there seems to be a lack of finesse and fluidity in her brief appearance as Black Widow. The script writers should have spent more time fleshing this one out. Her main action sequence is contrived and does not do justice to the expectations that weight down the character. Nor is the character important enough to be required by the main story and could have been done away with to give more emphasis and justice in later movies.

I was also pleasantly surprised to see Olivia Munn of French Maid Pie Jump and Eating Hot Dog fame in a newscaster role. A short and sweet appearance but her innate sassiness was very much missed. Stan Lee also does his customary blink and miss guest role.

Playing villains are Mickey Rourke as Whiplash an out of luck Russian Physicist able to duplicate Tony's reactor core design and Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer who  wants to make an army of Iron Man suits and sell them to the US Army. Though worthy adversaries they never seem to offer anything other than a minor distraction to Iron Man. Both of them lack the devilish quality and do not inspire awe and hate like The Green Goblin from Spiderman and Joker from The Dark Knight. However, the final action sequence between Whiplash's robotic minions and Iron Man backed up by War Machine is a redeeming factor and worthy of all the cat calls and inappropriate whistling your mouth can manage.

Fanboys also have enough goodies and easter eggs to keep them on the edge of the seat. Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury gives up chasing superheroes after end credits roll and appears to seem all important, nudge Tony Stark in the right direction and still look like doing nothing but eat screen space. The studios do seem to be prepping up the audience for the Superhero universe they want to explode in our faces. As with all recent Marvel movies, do stay back till end of the credits roll to know what I am talking about.

At this point one might wonder what is the movie doing with so many characters who must be jostling with each other for screen space but all credit to the Indie actor turned producer/director Jon Favreau who helms a tight ship even putting in a cameo himself and never allows the movie to go out of hand. The story moves forward seamlessly and even the minor characters have enough personality to make the audience feel for them yet not get distracted from the central ones.

As expected from any Hollywood creation of this caliber the production is top notch with no cost spared on the CGI. Apart from usual strapping on the suit and robots going all guns at each other scenes, one of the most jaw dropping ones are of Tony interacting with J.A.R.V.I.S. his lab AI which makes Minority Report look amateurish in comparison. However, that star shield didn't really seem like it belonged to a super soldier but maybe there is a deeper explanation for it. (*evil grin*). The retro/rock soundtrack infuses a sit back, look how cool we are and enjoy the movie feel. AC/DC has a major hand and the wait for end credits to roll is made bearable by "Highway to Hell" belting out from the Dolby speakers.

So does it stand up to scrutiny and deserve a watch? Hell Yes it does. Even if you are  someone who has not followed the Iron man series and is just looking for some mindless weekend entertainment from a film that does not take itself seriously then Iron Man 2 will provide you the escapism into a fantasy world of flash boom bang. So go out and break out the popcorn tub cause Iron Man 2 does not disappoint.

James Bond - Bond no more (A quick critique on Quantum of Solace)

I am not going to descend into a lengthy tirade against the non-existent story but multiple action sequences stitched together, do not a movie make. I can watch any of those fantastic bombastic -tastic action sequence programmes on AXN for that. I entered the hall looking for a Bond I knew and loved. Suave, Charming, graceful and over the top even in the line of fire. One that knew how to walk the talk and talk the walk. What I got was another dose of Bourne, XXX and their likes. James is now Jason. Fill it, shut it, forget it.

I can't comment on Daniel Craig's acting because there is not a single scene that requires him to. He just walks fast, talks fast, runs fast, falls fast and flies fast turning his head like a robot all the time. He simply does not exude the charisma that made every single male exiting the hall think they are Bond for the next few days. That's a Blue Collar Bond for you. There is only one scene that evoked any emotion out of me and that had nothing to do with Bond. The villain dips one of James's lays in fossil fuel and leaves her dripping on the bed. Diabolical! If this is the new Bond who does not give a damn whether his martini is shaken or stirred, I say we nominate one of the villains to play bond next time. Best bond ever? Ha! Far from it.

The Bourne Trilogy

I watched the Bourne trilogy (Identity, Supremacy and Ultimatum) back to back yesterday. Fast paced action, slick direction, a tight script and it was 5 hours of sheer adrenalin. I could notice myself do everything faster for the next five hours.

The movies deviate a lot from the books but do not take away from the spirit in any way. They provide what Ludlum always wanted to in his books. Edge of the seat entertainment.

He wrote only three of these but two more of the Bourne series (Legacy and Betrayal) have been published posthumously. Legacy seems to be in pre-production and might just make it to the silver screen!

Transformers - A growing passion

I have made no bones about my passion for the Transformers movie and along the same lines I have been engulfed in its murky world of toys, animations and the likes. A few small indulgences are shown below:

Chak De - Impressions on Shah Rukh Khan

As I was watching Chak De in a Volvo Bus while on my way back from Mumbai to Pune, I suddenly realized how well Shah Rukh Khan acted in the movie. For the second time (after Swades) he did not let the SRK persona overcome the protagonist he was playing. It led me to believe that this man is so smart he knows that his mass market appeal lies in being SRK in all his movies however once in a while he essays a character role to silence his detractors who think he cannot act. One can't help but be in awe of him.

Beowulf - Literally sexy animation

So the word sexy has been done to death, used for the mundanest of things and when something really S-E-X-Y comes up you find that the word sexy is just not enough to describe it. It is Fucking Sexy. Is that taken? It schmoozes and oozes. Violence, debauchery and gore all galore!

How would you describe Angelina Jolie emerging naked out of a pool. Completely naked. Head to toe naked. You got it right?. Angelina Jolie Naked.

As with me this CGI adaptation of Homer's classic is going to draw the numbers on the sheer strength of that scene alone. However the movie also has a lot else going for it. For one, it is called the "The Lord of the Rings" of the animated world. (I know, too many the's). For a major part of the movie I forgot I was seeing something animated. The scale of the movie is huge and Beowulf's fight with Grendal and in the fag end with his dragon son is breathtaking. The animation is as life like as they can make it and after Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, this is truly the next evolution of hyper-detailed CGI. Not much to say on the acting front as I would take a real Anthony Hopkins over an animated one anyday.

Director Robert Zemeckis spins a yarn and from what I have heard it is one with a twist. A deviation from the original story but a story well told nevertheless. Beowulf must survive the fight with the monster Grendal but even if he does so can he escape the wrath of Grendal's devil mother and can he unearth the murky past of Grendal's origin? Can he prevent incuring a curse that he just help lift? You will find all these answers in the movie but if Zemeckis really had to take liberties with the storyline he could atleast have blessed us with a fight scene between a naked Angelina Jolie and anyone. Anyone. Will someone fight the damn woman please? Will you?

Meet Joe Black - Impressions

I had an opportunity to catch this flick on the tube recently. I ran into it 20 minutes into the movie, in the scene where Brad Pitt is getting his first taste of Peanut Butter. His expressions and mannerisms told me that it is going to be one hell of a watch.

The story in very simple words is about Death who comes to take away a big media mogul Anthony Hopkins whose time is up. However impressed by Hopkins's view on life, Death makes him an offer that he will let him live as long as he can keep Death interested in living life on this plane. Death takes over the body of Brad Pitt, a name of Joe Black and proceeds to live along with Hopkins and his family while experiencing what life is about.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119643/

Brad Pitt has really acted well, especially in the first half as he is learning about human senses , while his polite response to every mundane query is hilarious without coming across as sarcastic. Hopkins as usual is fantastic and is ably supported by Claire Forlani playing his daughter and Joe Black's love interest Susan. The frames might seem to drag at times as the camera lingers on every twitch of the muscle of every character. However, it is this laid back pace while slowly engulfs you in the turmoils that Pitt's character undergoes as he discovers the wonders of life and love.

The movie also helped me rediscover the haunting music of "What a wonderful world" by "Louis Armstrong". I first heard it in the movie "Good Morning Vietnam" when Robbie Williams plays it on the station radio. A beautiful beautiful song with a melody that can soften the hardest of souls. It makes my tear ducts go into overdrive. A song sung by a brave man during the times when black people were beaten up on the streets for no rhyme or reason. A must watch and listen for every human being.

Transformers - The Movie

Sometimes it hits you when you are expecting it the least. What started out as just toys is now a multi million dollar franchisee spreading its tentacles around the globe, one of which finds its way to India. About time, I say.

Transformers is about cars and robots and fighter jets and guns, big guns and tanks and metal...ok you get the drift. A planet in a distant galaxy is overrun by the evil Decepticons being held back by the goodie Autobots. In the words of a character they are NBE's, (Non Biological Entities). Chunks of metal with sentient thought, which (or who?) can shapeshift into almost any piece of machinery with moving parts, to hide their presence on earth. The Decepticons are in search of "AllSpark", a cube which will enable them to bring alive all the technology on earth and help in their cause of world domination. The only thing standing between their goal are the Autobots, a lanky teenager who wants to mate (snicker), a hot va va voom with a dubious past record and a pair of spectacles. I hope this doesn't make sense and I hope that you watch the movie so that it does because I am still reeling in the aftermath of the brilliant spectacle that Michael Bay has brought alive on the screen. It's good guys versus the bad guys through and through. Metal against metal. Nothing prepares you for the scene of a vehicle changing itself into a robot and no matter how many times you see it, you just can't have enough. The CGI is cartoony in a few scenes but I am not going to fuss over that you wuss. This is Car Wars.

This for me is the movie of 2007. I haven't been so immersed in the story since star wars or Lord of the Rings. Nor have I been so on the edge of my seat since Lagaan. Amazing action scenes coupled with snip snip editing, Transformers is what every testosterone driven male must watch. Not that I am a sexist but boys like blue and girls like pink. There is A certain truth in that.

Simpsons - The Movie

Finally it arrives and right from the word go it holds you spell bound in a vice like grip of wit and humor. You need to put on your thinking cap for this one. Nothing is spared, not even you. The writers seem to latch on to your every thought, predicting the next and spoofing it as it beams into your head, just as I know what you are thinking now. This is the best review ever...so far!! :-)

Watch!!

P.S. A scene, I still can't get enough of. As certain destruction threatens the town, the church and bar are shown standing side by side. The church goers run out screaming and so do the bar patrons, only to cross sides over into each other's territory.
